What is the difference between UGC-DEB and AICTE approval?
Short answer
UGC-DEB entitles a university to award a degree in distance or online mode. AICTE approves certain technical and management programmes. They are different instruments.
For an online or distance MBA awarded by a university, UGC-DEB entitlement is the thing that matters. AICTE approval is a separate approval covering technical and management programmes where it applies, and it does not confer degree-awarding power.
A PGDM from an autonomous institute sits outside UGC-DEB entirely, because no university degree is being awarded.
What to check
- Establish which body actually awards your qualification — that decides which approval applies.
- For a diploma, ask whether AIU has granted equivalence to that specific programme.
