Is a PGDM the same as an MBA?
Short answer
Same academic level, different instrument. An MBA is a university degree; a PGDM is an institute’s own diploma.
The IIMs awarded a PGDM rather than an MBA until the IIM Act of 2017, which is the clearest evidence that a diploma is not automatically the lesser thing.
The practical difference appears wherever a written rule names a degree. There, a PGDM may need AIU equivalence for the specific programme — an extra document you would rather hold in advance.
What to check
- If your next step is decided by a rulebook, take the degree.
- If it is decided by capability, the institute’s standing matters more than the award type.
