What an online MBA costs all-in: the fee heads beyond tuition, itemised
Plan on the all-in figure, not the advertised one. Tuition is one head among several: registration, examination fees each semester, the project and viva, late charges if you slip, and the documents at the end. Ask for the fee card that itemises every head to the final semester.
Most sticker shock in distance and online MBAs is not caused by large numbers. It is caused by heads of fee appearing one at a time, after the decision to enrol has already been made. The cure is boring and effective: get the complete itemisation in writing before the first payment.
The heads, one by one
Application or prospectus fee. Small, paid before admission, and usually non-refundable regardless of what happens next.
Registration or enrolment fee. A one-time charge at admission. Some universities also levy a yearly re-registration charge that behaves like a renewal; find out which pattern yours follows.
Tuition. The head the advertisements quote, billed per semester or per year. On its own it answers “what does a semester cost”, not “what will the qualification cost me”.
Examination fees. Frequently billed apart from tuition, per semester or per paper, shortly before hall tickets are issued. Reappearing in a paper means paying its examination fee again — see what happens if you fail a paper.
Project, dissertation and viva. A final-stretch head many first-time students never hear about until the last year: topic registration, evaluation, and the viva sitting.
Learning-platform charges. Some universities fold LMS access into tuition; others bill an e-resource or portal fee on its own line.
Late charges. Attached to instalment and examination-form deadlines. Avoidable in principle; budgeted-for in practice.
The documents you came for. Provisional certificate, consolidated marksheet, transcripts, migration certificate, and the degree itself — several of these carry issuance charges, and transcripts for employers or foreign evaluation are typically charged per copy.
Costs the fee card will never show
Two more lines belong in your private budget even though no institution bills them. First, equipment and connectivity: a usable laptop and reliable data are assumed by every online programme and supplied by none of them. Second, attendance costs where they apply — if examinations or the viva are held at physical centres, there is travel, and for outstation candidates possibly a night’s stay and a day of leave. None of this is the institution’s fault; all of it is your money.
Two honest ways of quoting — and the one trap
Institutions quote in two legitimate styles. Head-by-head, where the prospectus prints each charge separately and you do the totalling; and all-in, where a single figure is stated as covering the programme. Neither style is deceptive by itself. The trap is reading a head-by-head tuition line as if it were an all-in total — that misreading is where most “hidden fees” complaints turn out to originate. A prospectus that prints its charges in separate lines is not hiding anything; it is simply leaving the arithmetic to you, and the arithmetic is your job before enrolment, not after.
For a sense of the second style: the Subharti distance MBA that this desk supports states ₹65,000 as the complete figure for the two-year programme. The word doing the work there is complete — and even when a figure is presented that way, the diligent move is the same question in writing: does this cover examinations, the project, and the final documents? (Openness note: IICT and IIPM operate this site, and the Subharti programme is taught through IICT — weigh that as you read.)
Pinning down your own number
- Ask for the written fee schedule to the final semester, every head on it, before paying anything beyond the application.
- Confirm in writing whether examination fees sit inside or outside the quoted figure.
- Ask the per-paper cost of reappearance, because one backlog is common enough to budget for.
- Ask what the end documents cost, and which of them are issued only on request.
- Get the late-charge schedule now, while it is still hypothetical.
